The Phoenix Mountains Preserve, in the northeast part of Phoenix, covers more than 7,000 acres and offers breathtaking views and recreational opportunities including hiking, horseback riding, and picnicking. The Phoenix Mountains Preserve was created in the 1960's to protect and set aside the undeveloped areas of the Phoenix Mountains, including Squaw Peak, North Mountain, Dreamy Draw, Shaw Butte, Lookout Mountain, and Shadow Mountain. Squaw Peak is one of Phoenix's best known landmarks with its craggy, easily identifiable pinnacle at an elevation of 2,608 feet. Surrounded by the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, Dreamy Draw Recreation Area sits in the basin of Dreamy Draw Dam, constructed in 1973 to retain water in times of flood. Dreamy Draw features a short interpretive trail at the water catchment provided for wildlife, and provides access to more than 60 miles of designated trails throughout the Phoenix Mountains Preserve.
